d. swallow

you must go on. becoming the bird is a
more subtle transition, your wings fluffing
and elongating, your bones retreating to
your soft interior. your long legs talon. your
cry becomes sweet. your wings take you to
the sound of your former brethren, the
cricket, and you swallow him. you feed and
gather sticks in tandem. the desire to
consume wars with the desire to nest.
